David Martell is a Professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto which he joined as a Lecturer in 1974. He first became interested in forest fires at an early age. He completed his B.A.Sc. (1971), M.A.Sc. (1972), and Ph.D. (1975) in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto where he studied Management Science and Operational Research and their application to forest fire management. He worked for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests as a summer student in the Fire Control Unit in Toronto for several summers beginning in 1970. He joined the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto as a forest fire management specialist in 1974. After he completed his Ph.D. he spent part of the 1975 fire season as a member of a fire crew stationed at Shebandowan in Thunder Bay district. He has worked as a consultant to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and several other government agencies.
His current research interests include the application of operational research and information technology to fire and forest management and the development of decision support systems for fire and forest managers. His publications have appeared in both Forestry (e.g., Canadian Journal of Forest Research and Forest Science) and Operational Research (e.g., INFOR and Operations Research) journals. He is an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, a member of the NSERC College of Reviewers for Canada Research Chairs, a member of the Ontario Forest Policy Committee and a Past President of the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS).
